Inducer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005795
A molecule that initiates or increases the expression of a gene or the activity of an enzyme. In molecular biology, inducers often bind to repressor proteins, causing them to detach from DNA and allowing transcription to proceed. A common example is lactose, which induces the expression of genes for lactose metabolism in bacteria.
