Repression
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010202
The decrease in the rate of synthesis of an enzyme or other protein in a cell, typically in response to the presence of a specific molecule. This regulatory mechanism controls gene expression by preventing the transcription of messenger RNA from a gene. For example, the presence of tryptophan represses the enzymes involved in its synthesis.
