Catabolite repression
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012952
A regulatory mechanism in bacteria where the presence of a preferred carbon source, such as glucose, inhibits the expression of genes required for the metabolism of alternative carbon sources. This allows the cell to prioritize the most energetically favorable substrate. The mechanism often involves cyclic AMP and specific regulatory proteins.
