Enzyme repression

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004001

A drop in the rate at which an enzyme is made, triggered by a particular molecule that is frequently the end product of the pathway the enzyme serves. By cutting production of its own pathway's enzymes when product is plentiful, the cell avoids overproducing it; this is negative feedback acting at the level of gene expression. The tryptophan operon of Escherichia coli, repressed when tryptophan is abundant, is the standard example.
