indolamine-2,3-dioxygenase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005791

A heme-containing enzyme that catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in the catabolism of the amino acid tryptophan along the kynurenine pathway. This enzyme's activity is induced by inflammatory signals, particularly interferon-gamma, and leads to local tryptophan depletion. By depleting tryptophan, the enzyme suppresses T lymphocyte proliferation, a mechanism involved in immune tolerance.
