Feed-back inhibition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004370
A cellular control mechanism where the end product of a metabolic pathway inhibits the activity of an enzyme that catalyzes an early step in that same pathway. The product molecule binds to a specific regulatory site on the enzyme, distinct from the active site, inducing a conformational change that reduces its catalytic efficiency. Unlike competitive inhibition, the inhibitor molecule does not compete with the substrate for the active site, but rather acts allosterically to regulate the pathway's output.
