Secondary substrate metabolism

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010634

The metabolic transformation of a chemical compound by microorganisms that do not derive energy or carbon from the compound itself. This process occurs when the primary growth substrate is present, and the secondary substrate is transformed incidentally. It is a common mechanism for the biodegradation of xenobiotics in environmental systems.
