Cometabolism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002278
The metabolic transformation of a substance by microorganisms that do not derive energy or nutrients from the reaction, but rather perform it while metabolizing another primary substrate. This process, also known as cooxidation or secondary substrate metabolism, can lead to the degradation of recalcitrant compounds that would otherwise persist in the environment. An example is the degradation of trichloroethylene by methanotrophs.
