Recalcitrance

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010005

The property of a substance, typically an organic compound, to resist degradation or breakdown by biological, chemical, or physical processes in the environment. Recalcitrant compounds persist for extended periods, leading to their accumulation and potential environmental contamination. Examples include certain pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and some plastics.
