Sulfonic anhydrides
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011566
Compounds of the structure RSO2-O-SO2R', formally made from two sulfonic acid molecules by loss of one water. They are highly reactive electrophiles that transfer sulfonyl groups, so they act as sulfonylating agents, as when triflic anhydride converts alcohols into triflates. Triflic anhydride, (CF3SO2)2O, boils near 82 degrees Celsius.
