Recoil

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010015

The momentum imparted to an atom or nucleus as a result of emitting a particle or photon. This phenomenon causes the atom or nucleus to move in the opposite direction to the emitted particle. Recoil energies can be substantial enough to break chemical bonds or displace atoms in a crystal lattice.
