Szilard-Chalmers effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011786
A nuclear phenomenon where a chemical bond is broken following a nuclear reaction, allowing the newly formed radioactive atom to be chemically separated from its parent nuclide. This effect typically occurs when a neutron capture reaction imparts sufficient recoil energy to the nucleus to rupture its chemical bonds. It is used in the production of high specific activity radioisotopes.
