Radiative capture
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009840
A nuclear reaction in which a nucleus captures an incident particle, most often a neutron, and the resulting compound nucleus de-excites by emitting gamma radiation. Neutron capture gives a heavier isotope of the same element, while proton capture gives an isotope of the next higher element. It is the reaction behind neutron activation analysis and prompt gamma-ray analysis.
