Recoil labelling
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013488
A method for introducing a radioactive nuclide into a molecule by exploiting the kinetic energy imparted to the nuclide during a nuclear reaction. The energetic recoil atom can break existing bonds and form new ones within a target material. This technique has been applied to label organic compounds, for example with tritium by recoil from the 6Li(n,alpha)3H reaction.
