Mössbauer effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007590

The recoil-free emission and resonant absorption of gamma rays by atomic nuclei bound in a solid lattice. This phenomenon occurs when the nucleus is tightly bound, preventing recoil energy from being dissipated as phonon excitations. It forms the basis of Mössbauer spectroscopy, which provides information about the chemical environment, oxidation state, and magnetic properties of specific isotopes, such as iron-57.
