Phonon

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008768

A quantum of vibrational energy in a crystal lattice, analogous to a photon as a quantum of electromagnetic radiation. Phonons describe the collective excitations of atoms or molecules in a solid, propagating as waves. Their energy is directly proportional to their frequency, with the proportionality constant being the Planck constant.
