Quantum
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009758
The smallest discrete amount of a physical quantity that a system can exchange, especially the photon, which is the quantum of electromagnetic radiation. A photon carries energy equal to Planck's constant times the radiation frequency, E = hν, and one mole of photons is called an einstein. Energies of bound systems and angular momentum are quantized, whereas the energy of a free particle varies continuously.
