Phonophobia

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008769

An abnormal fear of or aversion to sounds, classed as a specific phobia, in which everyday noises, often loud ones but sometimes soft ones, provoke disproportionate anxiety or distress. The term is also used for the sound sensitivity that accompanies migraine, and it overlaps with hyperacusis, a reduced tolerance of normal sound levels without a fear component. The International Classification of Headache Disorders lists phonophobia alongside photophobia as a criterion for diagnosing migraine.
