Peritonic reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008663

An isothermal, isobaric reversible reaction in a ternary solubility system in which a saturated liquid and one solid phase react to give a single new solid phase when the solvent component is removed, for example liquid plus solid alpha giving solid beta. The system is invariant at the peritonic point, which lies between the compositions of the liquid and alpha. A peritectic reaction is driven by a temperature change, whereas this one is driven by solvent removal at fixed temperature.
