Pseudo-catalysis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009632
The acceleration of a reaction by an acid, base or similar species that stays at nearly constant concentration because it is buffered or in large excess, yet is consumed in the process, so it is not a true catalyst. Acid-accelerated amide hydrolysis is the standard example, since the acid is used up in protonating the amine product to an ammonium ion. Acid-accelerated ester hydrolysis, in which the acid is regenerated, is proper acid catalysis.
