Superacid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011586
An acidic medium with a proton-donating ability greater than that of pure sulfuric acid. Its acidity is quantified by the Hammett acidity function (H₀), with superacids having H₀ values more negative than −12, the value for 100% H₂SO₄. A common example is "magic acid", a mixture of antimony pentafluoride and fluorosulfuric acid, which is strong enough to protonate alkanes.
