Fingerprint bands

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004433

Absorption or scattering bands in an infrared or Raman spectrum that are characteristic of the overall molecular structure of a compound. These bands arise from complex vibrational modes involving many atoms and are unique to each molecule. They are found in the fingerprint region of the spectrum, typically below 1500 cm⁻¹ in infrared spectroscopy.
