Divergence

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001130

The spreading out of seismic wave energy as it propagates away from its source, causing a reduction in amplitude. This geometric spreading is a fundamental physical phenomenon that must be accounted for during seismic data processing. The amplitude decay due to divergence is proportional to the inverse of the distance traveled for body waves and the inverse square root of distance for surface waves.
