Propagation constant

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010690

A complex quantity that describes how an electromagnetic wave's amplitude and phase change as it travels through a medium. Its real part, the attenuation constant, measures the signal's decay in amplitude per unit distance, while its imaginary part, the phase constant, measures the change in phase per unit distance. The propagation constant's value depends on the wave's frequency and the electrical properties (permittivity, permeability, and conductivity) of the atmospheric medium.
