Phase velocity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007898
The speed at which a particular phase of a wave, such as a crest or trough, propagates through a medium. It is calculated as the wavelength divided by the period of the wave. For atmospheric and oceanic waves, phase velocity can differ from the group velocity, which describes the propagation of wave energy.
