Wave train

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010841

A series of successive atmospheric waves, such as Rossby waves or gravity waves, that propagate together as a group. The energy of the disturbance travels at the group velocity, which is the speed of the envelope containing the waves, and this can differ from the phase velocity of the individual crests and troughs within the train. This behavior is observed in the large-scale circulation patterns of the mid-latitudes.
