Celerity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004214

The speed at which a wave propagates through a medium, representing the phase speed of the wave. It is distinct from the velocity of individual particles within the medium, which oscillate around an equilibrium position. For gravity waves in deep water, celerity depends on wavelength.
