Refraction
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003083
The bending of a seismic wave's path as it passes from one medium into another with a different velocity, governed by Snell's Law. This phenomenon occurs when the wave encounters an interface at an angle other than normal incidence. Refraction is used in seismic surveys to determine the velocity structure of shallow subsurface layers, particularly for static corrections.
