Break

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000445

The first arrival of seismic energy at a geophone or hydrophone, indicating the direct wave or a refracted wave from a shallow layer. Identifying the first break is a key step in seismic data processing for static corrections, velocity analysis, and refraction tomography. It marks the initial detection of the seismic signal above the background noise level.
