Background gas

The normal, low level of hydrocarbon gas detected in the drilling fluid as it returns to the surface, originating from the formation being drilled. This gas is continuously monitored by a gas detector in the mud logging unit. An increase above the background level can indicate the presence of a hydrocarbon-bearing zone.
