The process of unscrewing a threaded connection in the drill string or casing string downhole. This operation is often necessary to free stuck pipe or to recover a portion of the string. It is achieved by applying left-hand torque, sometimes with the assistance of a string shot or other jarring devices, to separate the pipe sections.
