Acoustic scintillation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003254
The random fluctuations in the amplitude and phase of an acoustic wave as it propagates through a turbulent atmosphere. These fluctuations are caused by small-scale variations in the atmospheric refractive index, which are primarily due to temperature and wind speed variations. Acoustic scintillometers measure these fluctuations to determine atmospheric turbulence parameters, such as the structure parameter for temperature.
