Scintillation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008702

The rapid, random fluctuations in the intensity, phase, or angle of arrival of electromagnetic radiation as it propagates through a turbulent medium. In the atmosphere, these fluctuations are caused by small-scale variations in the refractive index due to temperature and humidity inhomogeneities. It is responsible for the twinkling of stars and can affect laser communication systems.
