Optical inhomogeneities in a transparent medium that are not visible to the naked eye but can be detected by specialized optical techniques. These variations in refractive index are caused by density gradients within the medium, such as those produced by temperature differences or pressure waves. Schlieren photography is a method used to visualize these flow phenomena in wind tunnels or atmospheric studies.
