Potential refractive index
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010678
A conservative atmospheric property that describes the refractive index an air parcel would have if brought adiabatically to a standard reference pressure, typically 1000 millibars. This index accounts for changes in density due to temperature and pressure variations, providing a more stable measure of radio wave propagation characteristics. It is expressed in N-units, where one N-unit corresponds to a change of 10^-6 in the refractive index.
