Scintillation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010579

The emission of light by a material when it absorbs ionizing radiation. This phenomenon occurs as excited atoms or molecules in the material return to their ground state, releasing energy as photons. Scintillation is the basis for many radiation detection techniques, converting invisible radiation into detectable light.
