Proportional gas-scintillation counter

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009554

A radiation detector that uses a gas-filled chamber where incident radiation excites the gas atoms, causing them to emit ultraviolet or visible light. This light is then detected by a photomultiplier tube, producing an electrical signal proportional to the energy of the incident radiation. It offers better energy resolution than a conventional proportional counter due to the absence of charge multiplication noise.
