Proportional counter
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009552
A gas-filled radiation detector that gives an electrical pulse whose height scales with the energy deposited by the incoming radiation. It operates at a voltage high enough for the primary ions to trigger an avalanche of secondary ionization in the strong field near a thin anode wire, but low enough that the multiplication factor stays fixed. Geiger-Müller tubes, run at higher voltage, give pulses of the same size whatever the radiation energy.
