Accelerating voltage scan
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000092
A way of recording a mass spectrum on a magnetic-sector instrument in which the magnetic field is held fixed and the accelerating voltage applied to the ions is varied, so that ions of successive m/z values are brought into focus at the detector. When combined with a fixed electric sector, the same scan gives an ion kinetic energy spectrum. Because m/z is inversely proportional to the accelerating voltage at fixed field, lowering the voltage brings higher masses to the detector.
