Radio acoustic sounding system
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008316
An instrument system that measures atmospheric temperature profiles by simultaneously transmitting acoustic and radio waves. The radio waves are scattered by refractive index fluctuations caused by the acoustic waves, and the Doppler shift of the scattered radio signal is used to determine the speed of sound. This speed is then converted to air temperature, providing continuous vertical temperature data.
