Air acoustic ranging sensor
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003374
A device that determines distance to an atmospheric feature by emitting sound pulses and measuring the time interval before the echo is detected. It functions by calculating distance based on the known speed of sound in air, which is adjusted for temperature and humidity. Instruments like sodar (sonic detection and ranging) use this principle to profile wind fields, while acoustic ceilometers measure the height of the cloud base.
