RAFOS technology
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008357
A system for tracking ocean currents using neutrally buoyant floats that emit low-frequency sound signals. These floats drift with the ocean currents at a predetermined depth and are acoustically tracked by an array of moored hydrophones. RAFOS (RAnge Fixing Of Sound) floats provide long-term Lagrangian measurements of ocean circulation.
