Indian Deep Water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006495

A water mass found at intermediate to deep levels in the Indian Ocean, typically between depths of approximately 1500 and 3000 meters. It is a mixture of several water masses, including Antarctic Intermediate Water, North Atlantic Deep Water that has circulated through the Atlantic, and saline water from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. This complex mixture results in properties that are distinct from the colder, denser Antarctic Bottom Water that flows beneath it.
