Bottom water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003993

The densest water mass lying on the floor of an ocean basin, formed in polar regions where surface water made cold and salty by sea ice formation sinks and spreads across the abyssal plains. Antarctic Bottom Water, with temperatures near 0 degrees Celsius or below, is the main example, and it underlies the less dense North Atlantic Deep Water.
