Intermittency
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006597
The characteristic of a time series or spatial field where periods of activity or high variability are interspersed with periods of relative calm or low variability. In atmospheric turbulence, intermittency describes the sporadic occurrence of intense eddies and strong gradients within an otherwise more uniform flow. This behavior is observed in phenomena like wind gusts, rainfall rates, and atmospheric boundary layer dynamics, where fluctuations are not continuously present but appear in bursts.
