Variability
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009949
The extent to which data points in a statistical distribution or time series diverge from the average value, as well as the extent to which they differ from each other. In climatology, it describes fluctuations in the climate system on all temporal and spatial scales, beyond those of individual weather events. Measures of variability include the standard deviation, variance, and the range of values, which quantify the degree of climate fluctuations around a long-term mean.
