Vertical velocity variance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010001

A statistical measure of the variability or intensity of vertical air motions within a given volume of the atmosphere. It quantifies the average squared deviation of vertical velocity from its mean value. High variance indicates strong turbulence or vigorous convection, which is often associated with unstable atmospheric conditions.
