Red noise

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008461

A type of noise or random process where the power spectral density decreases with increasing frequency, meaning lower frequencies have higher power. This pattern is often observed in geophysical time series, such as temperature anomalies or climate indices, indicating persistence or autocorrelation in the data. It contrasts with white noise, which has equal power at all frequencies.
