Noise figure

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010646

A measure of the degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio caused by components in a radio frequency signal chain, such as a receiver in a weather radar or satellite instrument. It is the ratio of the output noise power of a device to the portion thereof attributable to thermal noise in the input termination at standard noise temperature. An ideal, noiseless component has a noise figure of 1, or 0 decibels (dB).
