Noise power

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007565

The total power of unwanted random signals that interfere with the detection or measurement of a desired signal in an instrument. In remote sensing systems like weather radar or radiometers, this background energy originates from thermal effects within the electronics and from external environmental sources. The signal-to-noise ratio, which compares the desired signal power to the noise power, is a fundamental measure of instrument performance.
